I pulled a subset into our master branch; the new ref it got when cherry-picked onto master is noted:
– e455c3f Fix typo.
– 0a926fc Remove the ‘-‘ from shebang strings.
– 018fe2e Make Python shebangs portable.
– 17d1207 Remove whitespace after shebang (#!).

I believe that for the remaining commits in this PR I’ve given notes about why I prefer not to take them as-is, but if anything is unclear please ask.
